Mirrorshades: The Cyberpunk Anthology
ed. Bruce Sterling.
This one is required reading for any cyber-neophyte. It includes offerings from William Gibson, Greg Bear, Pat Cadigan, Rudy Rucker, John Shirley, Lewis Shiner, James Patrick Kelly plus the excellent Bruce Sterling & Lewis Shiner effort, "Mozart in Mirrorshades".
It's one of those rare anthologies - basically everything is really good. Mind you, if was to choose one of Wililam Gibson's short stories I don't know that I would have chosen "The Gernsback Continuum"... maybe "New Rose Hotel" or "The Winter Market" instead. But it hardly matters, because a good cyberpunk is going to get hold of Burning Chrome anyway, right? ;)
The copyright goes back to 1986, which means the book should be aging; but it's not really. Perhaps it's greying at the temples in terms of where the genre has moved, but the content is still up there. I guess you could say it's just not EDGE anymore :) That said, I'd still bet that you'll get your money's worth out of it.
At time of writing this one's out of print, so don't bug your friendly bookstore for it, eh? :) Do check your library, book exchanges and second-hand bookstores.
The Best of Interzone
ed. David Pringle.
A solid anthology.
